A lot of you are probably already operating a Joomla! 1.0.x or a Mambo 4.5.x website and now want to migrate it to Joomla!1.5. You may have a number of basic problems:

1. You need to back up the entire website.
2. The general source-code files need to be updated.
3. Additional components, modules, and mambots/plug-ins have to be updated.
4. Any changes that you yourself have made to the programs need to be updated.
5. Your contents have to survive this update procedure without damage.
6. Contents with special characters have to be converted according to UTF-8.

You can see from this list that an update can become quite complicated. The more you have worked with standard components, the easier it is; and the more individualized your website is, the more difficult it becomes. There are no general valid rules for updates at this time. This means that you have to first collect information to be able to establish an individual update plan for your site.

Backing Up Your Data

Before you make any plans and try out any migration components, back up your database and your files. Effect a MySQL dump with your provider's appropriate tool. In most cases this will be the phpMyAdmin program, which is also used in the xampplite environment. Click on the Export tab, mark all of the tables, and check all of the fields in the Structure checkbox. In the Data checkbox, select Complete inserts. You have to mark the Save as checkbox in the lower section and also check off the desired format. If the provider permits, use the zipped version. Compressed database files can be up to 95% smaller than normal database files. Confirm your selections by clicking the Go button.

1.SEOSimple

http://www.daobydesign.com/blog/seosimple-joomla-15-plugin/

joomla seo This simple Joomla 1.5 plugin simply takes the starting chunk of text from the page's content and applies that as the value for the meta description tag in the page's head. Search engines often use a Web page's meta description in the SERPs, and as such it is important that these meta descriptions have relevant text related to the page's content.

What this means is this plugin installs some sample data in the meta description field within your article manager when you create a new article. What is a sitemap

A sitemap is a collection of hyperlinks that outlines and defines the website's overall structure.

It provides both the end user and the search engine spider with the opportunity to navigate or index your web site more efficiently.

Why is a sitemap important for my Joomla web site

One of the advantages of running the Joomla! Content management system is the fact that you can download and install a number of different Sitemap components which once configured will automatically display the contents of your web site in a site map format to both your visitors and search engine spiders.

A sitemap plays an important role in terms of web site navigation and search engine optimization ( SEO ) as it enables the spider to crawl your site more efficiently plus it provides them with a clear overview to the content's of your web site.

Google has indorsed the need for including a sitemap on your web site and has introduced an option called Google Sitemaps "which is an easy way for you to help improve your coverage in the Google index".

Please note before creating a sitemap make sure your page titles, meta descriptions and SEF search engine friendly URLs clearly reflect the contents of your individual page contents as this will help both your visitors and the search engines to understand what each document contained in your web site is about and index, rank it accordingly.

Where can I download a sitemap component for Joomla!

This tutorial will provide you with guide during the development and search engine optimization of your Joomla web site.

The information covered in this article may help you improve your search engine rankings.

What not to do ?

I would strongly suggest you do not introduce the following approach when optimizing your Joomla web site.

1) Do not include hidden text within your web site

Some web masters have being known to include hidden text using targeting keywords on web sites to move up the search engine rankings. Google can spot this and will penalize your web site.

2) Loading pages with keywords

Avoid spamming the search engines by including lots of keywords which have little relevance to the content of your web site or make no sense if a real user was to visit and read the content on your web site.

3) Avoid Doorway pages

Do not use doorway pages IE - individually optimization pages for specific search engines.

4) Avoid cloaking

Cloaking involves dynamically generating thousands of keyword rich web page's using server side scripts which only the search engine bots can see but the end user can not. Some Webmasters have introduced this approach to gain a high ranking which may work in the short term but in the long term it will fail and your site will be penalize or from the search engines

5) Avoid automated submission web sites

You may have seen web sites selling services which include submitting your Joomla! web site to hundreds of directories for a few dollars. We recommend you avoid using automated submission services which basically submit your site to hundreds or low ranking link farm directories which have no relevence to the services you are offering.

We recommend you consider the following.

  1. Submit your site to the established high ranking human editied directories including ODP Open Directory Project and Best Of The Web
  2. Submit your site to high ranking directories which are relevent to the services or content you offer.
  3. Submit your site to free Press release sites like News Wire Today PR.com or Press Box

What to do ?

1) Create high quality keyword rich content
When writing content for your Joomla web site create it for users not search engines. Focus on creating content which is relevant to your web site (IE) if you run a Joomla template site then focus on writing content for joomla templates. Also Make use of your targeted keywords within the content and use H1 and H2 "bold" to highlight and reference keyword phrases. Use hyperlinks to reference the relevant web sites and also use anchor text.

2) linking strategy
Think about who your target audience and web sites who have a similar interest to the service or content your are offering via your web site. Do your research, Search Google, Yahoo, MSN or visit the communities and build up a list of sites with similar interests. For example if you run a Joomla web site dedicated to Joomla open source then build up a relationship with other sites based on exchanging web links with them or news articles. Also when submitting your web link to a web site make sure the title and keywords relating to the web site are referenced in the web link, news article.
