AkoComment comment SPAM
Post bai - Joomla Tutorials

I have been using AkoComment on my Joomla / Mambo Blog section and have allowed anybody to comment (as opposed to only allowing registered visitors to leave comments). This has opened the way for spam robots to be able to insert spam into comments and I have had to keep on deleting annoying comments about casinos and other alluring offers.

I finally had enough of it and did a search for preventing this type of Spam on Mambo or Joomla. (The nice thing about Wordpress is that it has a Spam word list. You can add words into your Spam list and any comments containing those words will not be added.)

The security option that I chose in the end for this Mambo site is the Security Images component, written by Walter Cedric. With this component activated, the user has to enter a series of numbers and letters from an image before the comment will be accepted.
The component cannot work on its own but works with a modified version of AkoComment and AkoCommentbot. You can download the whole package from the Joomla forge, at this link: http://developer.joomla.org/sf/search/do/results/guid4223FAE901083CF745E6C218/Project
The other option for protection against spammers is to use hashcash in conjunction (or on its own) with security images. Hashcash ties up the spammer robots and forces them to use a lot of CPU. This makes it 'expensive' for them to submit spam. I haven't bothered with this yet, I will try Security Images first and see if it works.

If you already have AkoComments installed, it is better to rather overwrite the code on your server with FTP rather than installing the component, since you will overwrite any comments that you already have on your site.

I copied the code from my hard disk onto the server for AkoComment and AkoCommentbot (if you have an existing AkoComment installation, I recommend that you ONLY copy the following files:
- akocomment.php, to your main ako_comment component directory
- your relevant language files
- the /packs directory
- akocommentbot.php, to the mambots directory
- admin.akocomment.html.php, to the ako_comment component directory under administrator and
- admin.akocomment.php, also to the ako_comment component directory under administrator
Please note that if you copy the config.akocomment.php to the administrator directory you will overwrite any previous settings that you had.
I set up the security related settings in my akocomment settings and it seems to work. Will now monitor the results to see if I get any more annoying comments posted about dating or casinos!

WYSIWYG editor problems
Post bai - Joomla Tutorials

You could possibly have the following problems with either the Administration backend and/or with the WYSIWYG editor.

Problem 1:

You might get a blank screen when you try to log in to the Administration backend. This is almost always because your 'live-site' setting in your Configuration.php file doesn't correspond with your Administration URL. You either have a www in your live-site setting in your configuration.php file and you are accessing your administration backend without the www or vice versa.

Problem 2:

You might log into the administration backend and find that none of your menus are showing! After lots of searching I found that this was an Internet Explorer Cache problem. The menus were showing fine when I accessed the Admin backend through Firefox.

Clear your IE cache by going into Tools->Internet Options and deleting your temporary Internet files. This solved the problem of my menu tabs not showing in the Admin backend.

Problem 3:

The Mambo File Manager

Are you still using FTP to upload your files to your Mambo server? It is time you try mamboXplorer. MamboXplorer is a file management component for Mambo. It allows browsing, uploading, editing, copying and moving of files and directories in the Mambo backend. The latest version has added the ability for you to extract and archive zip files and change file permissions.

MamboXplorer installs very smoothly. It works right out of the box, no configuration needed. The un-install is also clean. This component does not change or use any database.

Virtuemart Pathway - Why is it not working?

After installing Virtuemart, a highly integrated shopping cart for Joomla!, I realized that there was a small issue. The issue was with how Virtuemart and Joomla displayed the pathway of the cart. When looking at the product it displayed the a double pathway and with most of the links not working. While browsing a category you couldn’t go back to the main store because the link was not linkable. This was very annoying to me and after hours of figuring out what was going and going through code pieces I collaborated on a bunch of various different hacks and this is what ended up working for me and has been tested on all versions of Joomla and only with Virtuemart 1.0.5.

Open up the following file in your favorite editor:

How to view all module positions in J.oomla!

Here is a nice little easter egg built into Joomla! If you add ?tp=1 onto your address string then it will show all the module positions for your template (example: index.php?tp=1). This could be a nice time saver, especially when using third party templates.Cool
