One of the most disconcerting things with Joomla or Mambo is that often after a component has been installed it does not seem to work on the front end. Often when the component involves filling in fields that need to be saved you might end up with a Javascript error (that you will be able to quickly and easily identify since it comes up with a big flashing error message.... I am being sarcastic here. It actually comes up with the teensy-weensy  little yellow rectangle in the bottom left hand corner of your page with the words Done but with errors on page, discreetly written next to it.) You can see what the actual error is by double-clicking on the yellow triangle. The description is often not very useful - but my personal experience is that it is often a cache problem in combination with the Javascript used by the WYSIWYG editor. A possible solution is to first turn off the WYSIWYG editor to check if it makes any difference.

Go into the back end administrator and switch off your WYSIWYG editor in Site->Global Settings and try it again. If this solves the problem, you should try and clear your cache by going into Tools-Internet Options, Delete Temporary files.

Another pitfall for the unwary is that after a new installation done through Fantastico your configuration.php file is often not writeable. If you are in a hurry and don't read the messages in your Global Settings properly you will THINK that you have saved the setting to not use a WYSIWYG editor, while in fact the configuration.php file was not writeable and you haven't saved the setting.

First go into your FTP program and CHMOD your configuration.php file to be writeable (775 or 777 - although this last one is a bit dangerous) and THEN change your Editor to be No WYSIWYG.

Newsflash

Freqently people want to know how to customize the free templates that come with Joomla.  And, knowing how to do some template customization is an important Joomla skill to have.

A frequent question on the Joomla forums is, "how to I change or remove the "footer" text on a template."

It might be a "Template by ---- " or "Powered by Joomla"  or something like that.
